Project Ventilator
Background:
Project Ventilator was spurred after my roommate and I watched a Youtube video that explained Ventilator mechanics. As two mechanical engineers, the concepts being discussed in the video really resonated, and we decided to build a ventilator.
Problem Statement:
Hospitals are overwhelmed by the number of COVID-19 cases and are running short of beds & ventilators to care for patients. Therefore, people who require assistance breathing are struggling to find support. We aim to build a ventilator that is cheap, portable and able to sustain people's breathing as they look for proper medical care.
Solution:
Our ventilator had a total BoM cost of $300 and was 6"x12", enough to fit in a backpack. In addition, the ventilator is simple to use, only requiring the patient to turn on the device and occasionally monitor their oxygen levels. We even crafted a software that could monitor breathing patterns and adjust the frequency of breaths to improve oxygen intake. The device was used by my parents' community in India during the severe COVID-19 wave there in April 2021.
